Russian President Vladimir Putin has raised concerns about the United States’ growing interest in Greenland, claiming that Washington’s ambitions are “serious” and part of a long-term geopolitical strategy. Speaking at the International Arctic Forum in Murmansk, Putin noted that the U.S. has a history of attempting to acquire Greenland, referencing past efforts in the 19th century and after World War II.

Putin also accused NATO of increasing its military presence in the Arctic, suggesting that the alliance sees the region as a future conflict zone. In response, he announced plans to strengthen Russia’s military foothold in the Arctic by reopening Soviet-era bases and expanding defense infrastructure.

The Russian leader’s remarks come as U.S. Vice President JD Vance prepares to visit Greenland’s Pituffik Space Base, a trip that has drawn international attention amid rising tensions in the Arctic. The situation underscores growing competition between global powers for influence in the strategically important region.
