The Massachusetts Governor’s Office is facing a serious controversy following the arrest of one of its regional employees, LaMar Cook, on multiple felony charges involving drug trafficking and illegal firearms possession.
Cook, who served as Deputy Director of the Governor’s Western Massachusetts Regional Office, was taken into custody on Tuesday after a controlled delivery operation led authorities to seize eight kilograms of suspected cocaine at a state office building in Springfield — the same location where he worked. Investigators later linked Cook to another major bust earlier this month, involving 13 kilograms of cocaine found in packages at Hotel UMass in Amherst, where he was previously employed.
Following the arrest, Governor Maura Healey’s office issued a firm public statement, calling the actions “completely unacceptable” and announcing Cook’s immediate termination.
“The Governor’s Office has been made aware of the arrest of employee LaMar Cook. The conduct that occurred here is unacceptable and represents a serious breach of public trust. Mr. Cook has been terminated from his position effective immediately. This criminal investigation is ongoing, and our administration will fully cooperate with law enforcement,”
the statement read.
Cook was arraigned Wednesday in Springfield District Court, where he pleaded not guilty to charges including trafficking cocaine, unlawful possession of a firearm, and possession of ammunition without a license. The judge set bail at $25,000, with a dangerousness hearing scheduled for later this week.
Political analysts say the incident could test the Healey administration’s internal vetting and oversight policies. While the charges are directed at an individual employee, the scandal has already drawn criticism from opposition leaders, who argue that such lapses undermine public confidence in state leadership.
Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll also addressed the situation, stating that Cook was considered a trusted and capable staff member when hired in 2023. She emphasized that the administration took immediate disciplinary action and is reviewing internal procedures to prevent similar issues in the future.
The ongoing investigation is being handled by the Massachusetts State Police, the Hampden District Attorney’s Office, and federal partners. Officials are examining whether Cook acted alone or as part of a larger trafficking network operating in the region.
