Mello Buckzz: Rising Chicago Rap Star Linked to Tragic River North Mass Shooting

A deadly mass shooting during a release party in Chicago’s River North district has left four people dead and 14 injured — and at the center of it all is rising Chicago drill rapper Mello Buckzz. As authorities continue to investigate, questions have surfaced about the artist’s background, her connection to the victims, and whether she was the intended target.

🎤 Who Is Mello Buckzz?

Mello Buckzz (real name Melanie Doyle) is a fast-rising name in the Chicago drill rap scene. Hailing from the East Side’s “No Limit” neighborhood, she rose to prominence in 2022 with viral hits like “Boom (Mouskatool)” and “Boom Pt. 2” featuring Latto. Since then, she’s gained millions of streams and earned festival bookings, including a recent performance at Coachella.

Known for her gritty lyrics and raw storytelling, Mello Buckzz has collaborated with major names like G Herbo and drawn praise from critics and fans alike.

However, her rising fame hasn’t come without controversy. In 2023, she was charged with felony aggravated battery following a physical altercation with fellow rapper Amari Blaze. She later pleaded guilty in 2024 and received probation.

💥 The River North Shooting

On the night of July 2, 2025, guests gathered at Artis Restaurant & Lounge in Chicago’s upscale River North neighborhood for the release party of Mello Buckzz’s new EP, “HollyHOOD.”

Just after 11:00 p.m., a dark SUV drove by the venue, and three masked gunmen opened fire into the crowd outside. At least 32 rounds were fired, according to police.

Victims Identified:

  • Devonte Terrell Williamson, 23 – Mello Buckzz’s boyfriend

  •

  • Leon Andrew Henry, 25 – believed to be part of her inner circle

  •

  • Two women, ages 26 and 27

  •

  • 14 others were wounded, several critically

While Mello Buckzz left the venue before the shooting began, police believe she may have been the intended target. Investigators found multiple types of shell casings, indicating the use of both handguns and rifles.

😢 Mello Buckzz Speaks Out

Following the tragedy, Mello Buckzz took to Instagram to express her grief:

“My heart broke into so many pieces… I don’t wish this typa pain on nobody.”

She also posted messages asking for prayers for the victims and thanking supporters for their love.

🕵️ Investigation Ongoing

The Chicago Police Department is actively investigating the shooting, which they described as a “targeted, cowardly attack.” Surveillance footage is being reviewed, and no arrests have been made as of July 4.

Officials temporarily shut down Artis Restaurant, citing safety concerns and the need for a full investigation. The venue was already known to police from previous incidents.

Mello Buckzz’s rapid rise in the music world has now been overshadowed by a tragedy that’s shaken Chicago. As she mourns the loss of her loved ones and recovers emotionally, the city waits for answers — and justice — in one of its most high-profile shootings this year.
