Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger is facing mounting criticism following what many called a “really troubling” response during a recent debate. The controversy erupted after Spanberger declined to withdraw her support for Jay Jones, the Democratic nominee for attorney general, whose resurfaced text messages contained violent and disturbing remarks.
During the debate, Spanberger was repeatedly pressed by moderators and her Republican opponent to state whether she would rescind her endorsement of Jones, after text exchanges showed him allegedly fantasizing about violence toward a Republican lawmaker and referencing harm to the lawmaker’s family.
