Venezuelans in Madrid Demand Freedom for All Political Prisoners

Hundreds of Venezuelans living in Madrid gathered in the Spanish capital this week to demand the immediate release of all political prisoners in Venezuela, drawing international attention to ongoing human rights concerns in the South American country. The demonstration, organized by members of the Venezuelan diaspora and human rights groups, reflects growing frustration over what protesters describe as arbitrary detentions and political repression.

Waving Venezuelan flags and holding signs reading “Freedom for Political Prisoners” and “Human Rights for Venezuela,” demonstrators assembled in a central public square, chanting slogans and calling on the international community to take stronger action. Many participants said they were protesting not only as activists, but as family members and friends of detainees still held in Venezuelan prisons.

The protest comes amid reports that Venezuelan authorities have recently released a limited number of political detainees. While the government has described these releases as gestures of goodwill, demonstrators in Madrid argue that the measures fall far short of meaningful change. According to human rights organizations, hundreds of political prisoners remain behind bars, many without transparent legal proceedings or fair trials.

“Releasing a few prisoners is not enough,” one protest organizer said. “We are demanding the freedom of every person imprisoned for political reasons. Justice cannot be selective.” Protesters emphasized that partial releases do not address the broader issue of systematic repression and lack of judicial independence in Venezuela.

Spain has become home to a large Venezuelan expatriate community in recent years, driven by political instability, economic collapse, and human rights concerns in their home country. For many demonstrators, the rally was also a way to urge Spanish authorities and the European Union to apply diplomatic pressure on Caracas and prioritize human rights in their relations with Venezuela.

Human rights groups have repeatedly documented cases of arbitrary detention, harsh prison conditions, and allegations of mistreatment of political detainees. International organizations have called on Venezuelan authorities to comply with international human rights standards and ensure due process for all citizens.

The Madrid protest also highlights the role of the Venezuelan diaspora in keeping international focus on the country’s political crisis. Activists say that demonstrations abroad are crucial for amplifying voices that are often silenced inside Venezuela. “Many people inside the country are afraid to speak out,” one participant explained. “We protest here because we have the freedom to do so.”

As the rally concluded, organizers vowed to continue their efforts through future demonstrations, advocacy campaigns, and engagement with international institutions. They stressed that the release of all political prisoners is a necessary step toward reconciliation, democratic reform, and lasting peace in Venezuela.

While Venezuelan authorities have not responded directly to the Madrid protest, demonstrators say they will maintain pressure until concrete and comprehensive action is taken. For the Venezuelans gathered in Spain’s capital, the message was clear: true progress will only come when every political prisoner is free.
