The U.S. military has launched an investigation into a deadly strike that hit a girls’ school in southern Iran, as American forces continue to intensify their military campaign across the country. The probe is being conducted by United States Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees U.S. military operations in the Middle East.
The incident occurred in the city of Minab, where a strike destroyed the Shajareh Tayyebeh girls’ elementary school during the early phase of the expanding conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran. According to Iranian officials, the attack killed more than 150 people, many of them children, though independent verification of the exact casualty figures remains ongoing.
U.S. defense officials have acknowledged that American forces were operating in the area at the time of the strike and confirmed that an internal investigation is underway to determine what exactly happened. Pete Hegseth, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, said the military is carefully reviewing the incident and emphasized that U.S. forces do not deliberately target civilian facilities.
“We are investigating the situation,” Hegseth said during a briefing, adding that the United States “never targets civilian infrastructure.” Military officials say they are analyzing satellite imagery, weapon fragments, and operational data to determine whether the strike was caused by U.S. forces, another military actor, or a misidentified target.
Initial assessments from investigators suggest that U.S. forces may have been responsible for the strike, but officials stress that the findings are preliminary and not yet conclusive.
The school was reportedly located near a compound associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Iran’s powerful military force. Analysts say the proximity of military facilities could have led to confusion during targeting operations or may have resulted in the school being mistakenly identified as part of a military site.
Satellite imagery analyzed by independent experts indicates that multiple explosive munitions struck both the school and nearby structures during the attack. However, investigators have not yet confirmed which military forces carried out the strike or what specific weapon system may have been used.
The incident has sparked international concern and condemnation. The United Nations and several human rights groups have called for a full investigation, warning that attacks on schools or civilian facilities could constitute violations of international humanitarian law.
The strike also comes as the broader conflict between Iran and U.S.-allied forces continues to intensify. American and Israeli forces have conducted large-scale operations targeting Iranian missile bases, air defense systems, and military infrastructure across the country.
