President Donald Trump has announced a temporary suspension of 25% tariffs on certain Mexican and Canadian imports until April 2, 2025. This decision follows high-level negotiations with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, focusing on border security, drug trafficking, and trade stability.
As part of the agreement, Mexico will deploy 10,000 National Guard troops to curb illegal migration and fentanyl smuggling. Meanwhile, Canada has pledged a $1.3 billion investment to strengthen border security. The delay also aims to stabilize financial markets, which had reacted negatively to the initial tariff announcement.
This move provides time for further diplomatic discussions to address trade imbalances and economic concerns. However, the White House has indicated that if progress is not made, the tariffs could be reinstated after April 2025.
