President Donald Trump has appointed Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, as the interim National Security Advisor, effective May 1, 2025. This appointment follows the removal of Michael Waltz from the position due to controversies, including a breach of sensitive military communications on the messaging app Signal, which were mistakenly shared with a journalist.
In addition to his role as Secretary of State, Rubio will now serve as acting National Security Advisor, interim Administrator of USAID, and the Archivist of the United States. This consolidation of roles is reminiscent of Henry Kissinger’s dual positions during the Nixon administration.
The reshuffling of the National Security Council reflects Trump’s preference for direct control over foreign policy and a streamlined decision-making process. Rubio’s appointment aligns with the “America First” agenda, signaling a focus on loyalty and a less interventionist approach to international relations.
