President Donald Trump has ignited a political firestorm by accusing Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson of committing a “criminal offense” for obstructing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in Chicago. Trump claimed the two Democratic leaders should face jail time for their defiance, escalating an already tense standoff over federal enforcement powers.
Speaking during a campaign rally and later posting on his Truth Social platform, Trump said:
“The Chicago Mayor should be in jail for failing to protect ICE officers. The Governor too — both of them have broken the law.”
The remarks came as Trump authorized the deployment of National Guard troops to Chicago to assist federal officers amid growing tensions between the White House and local officials.
