Palm Springs Fertility Clinic Explosion Declared Terrorist Attack by FBI

A tragic and alarming event unfolded on May 17, 2025, when an explosive device detonated outside the American Reproductive Centers fertility clinic in Palm Springs, California. The FBI has now officially classified the deadly incident as an “intentional act of terrorism,” sparking nationwide concern about the growing threats facing reproductive health facilities.

Details of the Palm Springs Explosion
The explosion occurred just before 11:00 a.m. in the parking lot behind the fertility clinic located on North Indian Canyon Drive. The blast caused a powerful shockwave that damaged surrounding buildings and vehicles, scattering debris across a wide area. Tragically, one person died in the explosion, and at least four others sustained injuries.

Fortunately, the clinic was not open to patients at the time of the blast, and no staff members were harmed. According to clinic officials, the laboratory that stores embryos and handles IVF procedures is located offsite and was not impacted by the explosion.

Suspect Identified and Motive Revealed
The individual killed in the blast was identified as 25-year-old Guy Edward Bartkus of Twentynine Palms, California. He is believed to have been responsible for planting the explosive device and was killed in the detonation. Authorities recovered a disturbing 30-minute audio manifesto left behind by Bartkus, in which he refers to himself as a “pro-mortalist”—someone who opposes human reproduction and fertility treatments.

In the recording, Bartkus expressed strong anti-natalist views and condemned in vitro fertilization (IVF) as a form of unnatural population growth. He cited philosophical and environmental reasons for targeting the fertility clinic, calling reproduction “an act of cruelty.”

FBI and Local Response
The FBI, in cooperation with the ATF and local law enforcement, is continuing its investigation but has stated they are not actively seeking additional suspects at this time. Federal officials are reviewing whether Bartkus acted alone or had any online or in-person affiliations with extremist groups.

Palm Springs Mayor Jeffrey Bernstein called the act a “cowardly act of domestic terrorism” and emphasized that the city stands united in support of the clinic and its mission.

Clinic’s Statement and Community Support
In a public statement, Dr. Maher Abdallah, Director of American Reproductive Centers, confirmed that patient records and embryo storage were not compromised. He added that the clinic is working with law enforcement and will resume services as soon as it is safe to do so.
