A suspect accused of shooting a high-ranking Russian military general has been extradited from Dubai to Russia, in a dramatic development that has intensified political tensions and raised fresh questions about the motives behind the attack.
Russian authorities confirmed that the man, believed to be responsible for the attempted assassination of Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev, was detained in the United Arab Emirates before being flown back to Moscow under an official extradition process.
The shooting, which took place in northwestern Moscow, sent shockwaves through Russia’s military and intelligence circles. Alekseyev, a senior figure within Russia’s defense establishment and a deputy head of military intelligence, was reportedly attacked at close range near a residential building. He was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, but officials later said he survived emergency surgery and has since regained consciousness.
Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) identified the suspect as Lyubomir Korba, a Russian citizen with roots in the former Ukrainian Soviet region. Investigators claim Korba fled Russia shortly after the shooting and traveled to Dubai in an apparent attempt to evade arrest.
Russian officials said the UAE acted quickly after receiving Moscow’s request, leading to Korba’s detention and rapid transfer back to Russia. President Vladimir Putin publicly thanked the UAE leadership for assisting with the arrest and extradition, signaling the importance Moscow places on international cooperation in cases involving national security.
The case is now being treated as a major counterterrorism investigation. Russian authorities have accused Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) of being behind the attack, claiming the suspect acted under foreign direction. Ukraine has denied any involvement, calling the accusations politically motivated.
Reports also suggest investigators are searching for possible accomplices. Russian officials have indicated that more than one person may have been involved in planning or assisting the attack, though full details remain unclear.
The attempted assassination comes at a time of heightened conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and analysts say the incident could further strain diplomatic efforts in the region. Targeting a senior Russian general would represent a significant escalation, potentially aimed at disrupting military operations or sending a political message.
The extradition from Dubai is seen as a significant breakthrough, allowing Russian investigators to directly interrogate the suspect and potentially uncover additional details about who organized the attack and why.
For now, Russian prosecutors are expected to move quickly with formal charges, while the international community watches closely as Moscow pushes forward with its claims of foreign involvement.
The shooting and extradition have already become a major headline in global security news, highlighting how geopolitical conflicts are increasingly extending beyond battlefields into covert operations and targeted violence.
