The Social Security Administration (SSA) is tightening identity verification measures to combat fraud, requiring some individuals to verify their identity in person at SSA field offices starting March 31, 2025. This applies to those unable to complete verification online and those updating direct deposit information.
Critics argue that the change could disproportionately affect older adults, people with disabilities, and rural residents with limited internet access. Concerns have also been raised about service delays, especially as SSA plans to close several field offices and reduce staffing by 7,000 positions.
Advocacy groups, including AARP and Social Security Works, are urging SSA to reconsider the policy, warning that it may create barriers for vulnerable populations.
