BREAKING: A gunman opened fire outside a church in Michigan on Sunday morning, injuring multiple people and sparking panic among congregants attending a service. Local law enforcement and emergency medical teams responded swiftly to the active shooter situation, which unfolded just outside the First Grace Church in Dearborn, according to early reports.
Authorities have confirmed that at least four individuals were shot in the attack, including one security guard. Victims were rushed to nearby hospitals, and as of this writing, two remain in critical condition. The identities of the injured have not yet been released.
The suspect, described as a male in his mid-30s, was apprehended at the scene after a brief standoff with police. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots as worshippers were arriving for the late-morning service. “It sounded like fireworks at first,” said one church member, “but then people started screaming and running. We didn’t know what was going on.”
Local police have cordoned off the area and are conducting a full investigation. The shooter’s motive remains unknown, but FBI agents and ATF officials have been called in to assist, signaling that federal authorities are considering the possibility of a hate crime or domestic terrorism angle.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued a statement on social media, saying:
“Our hearts are with the victims and their families. We are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with local and federal law enforcement. There is no place for this kind of violence in our communities—especially at places of worship.”
The First Grace Church, known for its diverse congregation and active community outreach, was reportedly holding a special Sunday event that drew a larger-than-usual crowd. Security footage from the church and nearby businesses is being reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) have urged houses of worship across the state to remain on alert, though there is currently no indication of additional threats.
This latest incident adds to a growing pattern of gun violence at religious institutions in the United States, including high-profile shootings at synagogues, mosques, and churches in recent years. Faith leaders and advocacy groups are renewing calls for enhanced security protocols and stricter gun control measures in response.
As the investigation continues, law enforcement is asking anyone with information, photos, or videos from the scene to contact a dedicated tip line set up by the Dearborn Police Department.
A press conference is scheduled for this evening, where officials are expected to release more details regarding the suspect, charges, and any known connections to extremist activity.
