Senate Democrats, led by Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, are proposing new measures to reverse some of the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, which they argue are raising consumer prices. Schumer introduced an amendment during a Senate session aimed at eliminating tariffs that impact essential goods like groceries and medications.
This proposal reflects growing bipartisan concern over the negative economic effects of the tariffs. Republican Senators Chuck Grassley and Maria Cantwell have also introduced the Trade Review Act of 2025, which would require the president to notify Congress and seek approval for new tariffs, reasserting congressional authority over trade policy.
The urgency of these efforts is highlighted by recent market volatility, with significant declines in major global indices. The S&P 500 fell 6%, the Dow dropped by 2,100 points, and the Nasdaq declined nearly 6%. While many Republicans still support Trump’s trade policies, some within the party are calling for greater congressional oversight to address the economic fallout from these tariffs.
