Starting Wednesday, May 7, 2025, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will begin enforcing the REAL ID Act. This means that, for domestic flights and access to certain federal facilities, all travelers aged 18 and older must present a REAL ID-compliant identification, or an alternative form of TSA-approved ID like a U.S. passport.
✅ How to Identify a REAL ID
REAL ID-compliant IDs are marked with a star in the upper-right corner. Depending on your state, this may appear as a gold star, a bear with a star, or a state outline with a star. If your ID does not have this symbol, it is not REAL ID-compliant.
🛂 Acceptable Alternatives
If you don’t have a REAL ID, you can use other forms of identification, including:
- A valid U.S. passport or passport card
- A DHS trusted traveler card (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI)
- A U.S. military ID
- A permanent resident card (Green Card)
Children under 18 are not required to show ID when traveling domestically.
🕒 What Happens Without REAL ID
Without a REAL ID or an approved alternative, you could face:
- Longer wait times or extra screening at TSA checkpoints
- Denial of entry to federal facilities
- Inability to board domestic flights
The TSA has confirmed that enforcement of this rule will be strict starting May 7, 2025.
