In a fiery virtual speech to the United Nations General Assembly, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas denounced Hamas, condemned the devastation in Gaza, and called for urgent international intervention to end the ongoing war.
Condemning Hamas and Its Attacks
Abbas opened his remarks by unequivocally rejecting Hamas’s October 7 attacks on Israeli civilians. He emphasized that such actions do not reflect the will or aspirations of the Palestinian people, insisting that violence undermines the broader struggle for independence and statehood. He urged Hamas to disarm and hand over its weapons, declaring that the militant group must have no role in governing Gaza once the conflict ends.
Accusing Israel of Genocide
The Palestinian president also turned his focus to Israel, accusing it of waging a genocidal campaign in Gaza. He described harrowing conditions—widespread destruction, forced displacement, famine, and mass civilian casualties—as evidence of systematic attempts to erase Palestinian presence. In a defiant tone, Abbas insisted: “We will not leave our homeland. We will not abandon our land.”
Gaza Governance After the War
Looking ahead, Abbas outlined a vision for post-war Gaza under full control of the Palestinian Authority (PA). He stressed that reconstruction and governance must take place under legitimate Palestinian leadership, not through armed factions. According to Abbas, the PA is prepared to assume responsibility for both security and administration, reaffirming that Gaza is an inseparable part of the Palestinian state.
Call for a Two-State Solution
Central to his speech was a renewed appeal for the two-state solution as the only viable path to peace. Abbas demanded stronger international pressure on Israel to withdraw from occupied territories and allow humanitarian aid to flow freely into Gaza. He thanked the countries that recently recognized Palestinian statehood, calling such recognition a crucial step toward justice and international legitimacy.
However, Abbas cautioned that recognition alone is not enough. He insisted that true peace will only come when Palestinians achieve freedom from occupation and when perpetrators of war crimes face accountability.
Global Responsibility and Unity
Abbas urged world leaders to act decisively, warning that silence in the face of atrocities would embolden further violence and destabilize the region. He appealed for global solidarity, saying that Palestinians remain committed to peace but will not surrender their rights or identity under pressure.
In closing, Abbas spoke with defiance and hope, predicting that the “dawn of freedom” would eventually rise for his people. He vowed that Palestinians will continue their struggle with determination and resilience until they secure sovereignty, justice, and peace.
