Multiple Deadly Shootings Rock Mississippi Homecoming Events — At Least 8 Killed

A series of deadly shootings across Mississippi turned what were meant to be joyful high school homecoming celebrations into scenes of chaos and grief, leaving at least eight people dead and dozens more injured late Friday night. Authorities are now investigating multiple crime scenes spanning three different towns — Leland, Heidelberg, and Rolling Fork.

Leland: The Deadliest Scene

The most devastating shooting took place in Leland, a small community in the Mississippi Delta. Police said that gunfire erupted around midnight, just hours after a local football game and downtown parade. Witnesses described hearing a rapid burst of shots as hundreds of attendees fled in panic.

According to the Leland Police Department, four people died at the scene, and two more succumbed to their injuries later at a nearby hospital. At least 20 others were wounded, including several in critical condition. Emergency helicopters were seen airlifting victims to trauma centers across the region.

No arrests have been announced in connection with the Leland shooting, but investigators believe multiple shooters may have been involved. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) and state crime lab are assisting local police in gathering evidence and reviewing security footage.

“This is one of the darkest nights our community has faced,” said Leland Mayor Katrina Wilson. “These were young people celebrating homecoming — and now families are mourning unimaginable loss.”

Other Shootings in Heidelberg and Rolling Fork

Just hours later, another shooting erupted in Heidelberg, where two people — including a pregnant woman — were killed during a homecoming gathering. Police have identified an 18-year-old male as a person of interest and are questioning several witnesses.

Meanwhile, in Rolling Fork, gunfire broke out during a street party, leaving two people injured. Authorities detained two suspects at the scene, though their connection to the other incidents remains unclear.

Statewide Shock and Federal Involvement

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation confirmed that the three shootings appear to be unrelated but share a troubling pattern of violence surrounding large public events. Governor Tate Reeves released a statement expressing condolences and promising full cooperation between state and federal agencies to “bring every shooter to justice.”

“We cannot allow our communities to be terrorized by senseless violence,” Reeves said. “Every victim deserves justice, and every Mississippian deserves safety.”

Across social media, grieving families and residents have shared photos of victims, calling for peace and stronger gun violence prevention measures. Vigils are being planned in several cities across the state this weekend.

The Mississippi shootings have reignited national concern about the rise in community gun violence during school and public events. As investigations continue, residents of Leland, Heidelberg, and Rolling Fork are left to mourn — and demand answers — after a night that began in celebration but ended in tragedy.
