Mexico’s President Condemns Google’s Renaming of the Gulf of Mexico

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has criticized Google for changing the name of the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of America” on its maps for U.S. users, following an executive order by President Donald Trump. She warned that Mexico may take legal action if Google does not restore the original name.

In a letter to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Sheinbaum emphasized that “Gulf of Mexico” has been internationally recognized since 1607. She argued that the U.S. has no authority to rename the entire body of water beyond its territorial limits.

Sheinbaum urged Google to adhere to internationally accepted names and warned that Mexico is prepared to file a lawsuit if the change remains.
