A man has been arrested in connection with an arson fire that forced Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and his family to evacuate the governor’s mansion early Sunday morning, officials confirmed.

Authorities say the fire broke out around 2 a.m. on the property grounds of the governor’s official residence in Harrisburg. The flames were quickly contained, and no injuries were reported. Governor Shapiro, his wife, and their children were inside the mansion at the time but were safely evacuated.

State police later arrested a suspect in the area, identifying him as a 42-year-old man with no known ties to the Shapiro family. He has been charged with arson, reckless endangerment, and other related offenses. Investigators have not yet disclosed a motive but say the fire appears to have been intentionally set.

Governor Shapiro released a brief statement following the incident: “My family and I are safe, thanks to the swift action of first responders. We are grateful for their professionalism and bravery.”

The fire caused limited structural damage to an exterior section of the mansion grounds but did not reach the main living quarters. Officials say security measures are being reviewed and will likely be enhanced in the wake of the incident.

The governor, who has been in office since January 2023, continued with his public schedule later that day, making a brief appearance at a planned community event.

The incident has sparked concern over the safety of public officials and their families, with some lawmakers calling for increased protective measures at state residences. The suspect is currently being held without bail pending a court appearance.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing and that more details will be released as they become available.
