The conflict between Israel and Iran escalated sharply after Israeli forces launched airstrikes targeting fuel depots and energy infrastructure in Tehran, igniting large fires and sending thick smoke across parts of the Iranian capital.
The strikes marked the first major attacks on Iran’s oil infrastructure during the current phase of the war, signaling a shift in military strategy toward economic and logistical targets.
Oil Facilities Hit in the Capital
Israeli airstrikes hit multiple oil storage and refining facilities in and around Tehran, including major depots and a petroleum distribution center. Among the targets were the Shahran oil depot, the Tehran refinery in Shahr Rey, and storage facilities in nearby areas such as Karaj.
The explosions triggered massive fires visible across the city, while emergency teams worked to contain the flames. Iranian officials said several workers were killed in the attacks, including tanker drivers operating at the depots.
Israeli officials said the sites were chosen because they allegedly supported Iran’s military infrastructure, including fuel supplies used by armed forces and strategic operations.
Iran Retaliates With Missile and Cluster Attacks
Following the strikes, Iran launched retaliatory attacks against Israeli targets. Iranian forces reportedly fired missiles and used cluster munitions in an effort to overwhelm Israeli air-defense systems.
Iranian media also reported additional missile strikes targeting infrastructure linked to Israel’s energy sector, including facilities near the city of Haifa.
Military analysts say the use of cluster munitions increases the risk of civilian casualties because the weapons disperse multiple smaller explosives across a wide area.
Environmental and Health Concerns
The burning fuel depots released thick black smoke and toxic chemicals into the air over Tehran. Iranian authorities warned residents to stay indoors because the fires were releasing dangerous compounds, including hydrocarbons and sulfur-based gases.
Environmental officials also warned that rainfall passing through the smoke clouds could become acidic and hazardous, potentially causing skin burns or respiratory damage.
War Expands to Economic Targets
Until recently, most attacks in the conflict focused on military bases, missile launchers, and command centers. The strike on energy infrastructure indicates the war may be entering a more economically damaging phase.
By targeting fuel depots and refineries, Israel could disrupt Iran’s logistics, limit troop mobility, and put pressure on domestic energy supplies.
At the same time, analysts warn that attacks on energy facilities increase the risk of global oil market disruptions and could draw additional regional actors into the conflict.
Growing Regional Tensions
The latest strikes come amid an already volatile situation across the Middle East. Several countries are now monitoring the conflict closely, concerned that continued escalation could threaten shipping routes and energy infrastructure throughout the region.
With both sides exchanging increasingly powerful attacks, the conflict shows few signs of easing as the international community calls for restraint and renewed diplomatic efforts.
