Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee has condemned the U.S.’s latest tariff measures, calling them “ruthless” and a direct threat to the global trade order. His remarks came after the U.S. raised tariffs on Hong Kong goods to as high as 54%, citing concerns over national security and trade imbalances.

Lee accused the United States of abandoning its commitment to free trade and acting unilaterally in ways that undermine international norms. In response, he announced that Hong Kong would actively pursue new free trade agreements and deepen its economic integration with China and other regional partners.

Despite the pressure from Washington, Lee reaffirmed Hong Kong’s status as a free port and global financial hub. He emphasized the city’s resilience and adaptability, stating that Hong Kong would seize new opportunities to navigate the uncertainties caused by U.S. trade actions.

The statement underscores the growing divide between Washington and Beijing and highlights how Hong Kong is positioning itself amid rising geopolitical and economic tensions.
