Authorities in New York City are investigating a dangerous incident after a homemade explosive device was ignited during a heated protest outside the official residence of Zohran Mamdani, the mayor of New York City. The incident occurred near Gracie Mansion, the historic residence used by the city’s mayor, and quickly drew national attention due to the serious security concerns involved.
According to officials, the device was thrown during clashes between protesters and counter-protesters gathered near the mayor’s residence. Police confirmed that the object was not simply a smoke device but an improvised explosive device (IED) capable of causing serious harm.
Fortunately, the device ignited but failed to fully detonate, preventing what could have been a much more dangerous situation. No injuries were reported, though authorities said the incident could have resulted in significant casualties if the device had exploded.
NYPD Launches Major Investigation
The New York City Police Department responded quickly to the scene and secured the area around Gracie Mansion. Officers from the bomb squad examined the explosive materials and confirmed that the device contained components such as metal fragments and a fuse, indicating it had the potential to produce shrapnel.
Investigators are now working to determine who constructed the device and whether additional suspects were involved in the incident. Law enforcement sources say the investigation also involves the Federal Bureau of Investigation and its Joint Terrorism Task Force, which is reviewing evidence and assessing whether the case could qualify as a terrorism-related offense.
Police also reported discovering a second suspicious device near the protest site, which has been taken for forensic analysis.
Multiple Arrests Made After Violent Clashes
Authorities confirmed that six individuals were arrested following the protest. Some suspects are accused of throwing or handling the explosive device, while others were detained for offenses including disorderly conduct and assault during the demonstration.
Officials said the suspects traveled from outside New York to participate in the protest, which quickly escalated into confrontations between opposing groups. Video footage circulating online shows tense moments as police attempted to keep the crowds separated.
Protest Outside Gracie Mansion Turns Chaotic
The demonstration began as a politically charged protest targeting Mayor Mamdani, who has drawn both support and criticism since taking office. A small group of protesters gathered outside Gracie Mansion, while a larger crowd of counter-protesters arrived to challenge them.
Tensions between the groups escalated throughout the evening, leading to shouting matches and physical confrontations. It was during this chaotic moment that the explosive device was reportedly ignited and thrown toward the protest area.
Mayor Mamdani Responds
Mayor Zohran Mamdani later addressed the incident, condemning the violence and thanking law enforcement for responding quickly to prevent injuries. City officials confirmed that the mayor and his family were safe and not present in immediate danger during the incident.
The mayor also called for calm and urged residents to avoid escalating political tensions.
Investigation Continues
Authorities say there is currently no ongoing threat to the public, but the investigation remains active as forensic experts analyze the explosive devices and review surveillance footage from the area.
The alarming incident has sparked renewed debate about political tensions and public safety in major cities. As investigators continue their work, officials are determined to hold those responsible accountable for bringing a dangerous explosive device to a public protest.
