In the latest development amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas ceasefire, Hamas returned the bodies of four Israeli hostages, but authorities have revealed that one of the bodies does not match any known Israeli victim, raising new questions about the handling of hostages and the stability of the fragile truce.
The transfer took place on Tuesday, following a similar handover on Monday. According to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), three of the bodies were positively identified through forensic analysis as Tamir Nimrodi, Uriel Baruch, and Eitan Levi, who were among the hostages taken during the attacks on October 7, 2023.
However, the fourth body, after examination at the National Institute of Forensic Medicine, was found not to correspond to any of the known Israeli hostages, the IDF confirmed. “Hamas is obligated to make every effort to return the remains of all deceased hostages,” the IDF stated, emphasizing the importance of accountability and transparency in the implementation of the ceasefire.

In February 2025, Hamas returned a body it claimed belonged to Shiri Bibas, but subsequent forensic testing confirmed it was neither Bibas nor any other known hostage. The repeated errors have raised concerns among Israeli officials and humanitarian groups alike. Proper identification of hostages is considered a critical part of the ceasefire agreement, and delays or mistakes in returning the bodies risk eroding trust between the two sides. The IDF continues to press Hamas to fully comply with the ceasefire terms, ensuring that the remains of all 28 known deceased hostages are returned.
