A routine eviction in Indian River County, Florida, ended in tragedy on Friday when a sheriff’s deputy was fatally shot and two others were seriously injured, authorities confirmed. The incident has shocked the local community and raised questions about safety during law enforcement operations.
The deadly confrontation occurred around 9 a.m. in the Bermuda Club area near Vero Beach, where deputies were assisting a mother in evicting her 37-year-old son, identified as Michael Halberstam. The eviction followed a court order, and law enforcement was called to ensure the process remained peaceful.
According to Sheriff Eric Flowers, the situation escalated rapidly when Halberstam allegedly armed himself and fired at the deputies. Deputy Terri Mashkow, a 25-year veteran of the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, was struck and pronounced dead at the scene. Another deputy sustained a shoulder injury and is recovering in hospital, while a locksmith, assisting with the eviction, was critically wounded and underwent emergency surgery. Authorities also confirmed that Halberstam was shot during the exchange and is currently in critical condition.
Sheriff Flowers described Mashkow as a dedicated officer with decades of service, highlighting her commitment to the community. “She was an amazing deputy and will be deeply missed,” Flowers said during a press conference, visibly emotional.
The sheriff’s office noted that there had been multiple calls from the home over the past month, mostly from the mother regarding her son’s behavior. Despite these warnings, deputies did not anticipate a violent outcome, calling the eviction a routine law enforcement duty.
