The FBI is probing the background of Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the suspect behind the New Year’s Day truck attack in New Orleans that killed 14 people. Jabbar, a 42-year-old U.S. Army veteran, traveled to Cairo (Egypt) and Ontario (Canada) in 2023. Authorities are investigating whether these trips influenced his radicalization or provided support. In late 2024, Jabbar conducted surveillance of the French Quarter, using smart glasses to record footage. During the attack, he drove a truck into a crowd and attempted to detonate improvised explosive devices (IEDs), which failed to activate. Jabbar was fatally shot by police after a gunfight. The FBI is continuing to investigate to confirm if he acted alone or if further threats exist.
