Starting May 7, 2025, U.S. travelers age 18 and over will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or ID card to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities. If you don’t have one yet, here’s how to get it:
1. Know if You Need It
You’ll need a REAL ID if you plan to fly domestically using your driver’s license as ID. You can also use a valid U.S. passport or other TSA-approved identification instead.
2. Gather Required Documents
To apply for a REAL ID, bring the following original documents (photocopies usually aren’t accepted):
Proof of identity (e.g., valid U.S. passport or birth certificate)
Social Security number (SSN card, W-2, or pay stub with full SSN)
Two proofs of residency (utility bill, lease, bank statement)
3. Check Your State’s DMV Website
Each state has its own process. Visit your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) site to check the requirements and schedule an appointment.
4. Visit the DMV in Person
Bring all required documents to your appointment. Some states let you start the application online to save time.
5. Pay the Fee
The cost of a REAL ID varies by state but is usually similar to a standard license or renewal fee.
6. Wait for Your REAL ID
You’ll receive your REAL ID in the mail after processing. Times may vary, so apply early — well before May 2025.
A gold or star symbol on your license confirms it is REAL ID-compliant. Don’t wait until the last minute — beat the rush and get travel-ready now.
