On May 12, 2025, the federal sex trafficking trial of music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs commenced in New York’s Southern District Court. Combs faces multiple charges, including racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transportation for the purpose of prostitution. If convicted, he could face life imprisonment.

The prosecution’s case centers on allegations that Combs orchestrated a criminal enterprise involving coercive sexual encounters, often referred to as “freak offs.” These events allegedly involved drug use, physical abuse, and were sometimes recorded to blackmail participants. Key testimony has come from Combs’ former girlfriend, singer Cassie Ventura, who described enduring a decade of manipulation, violence, and forced participation in these encounters.

During her testimony, Ventura recounted specific incidents, including being assaulted with a wine bottle opener and being coerced into selecting participants for the “freak offs.” She also detailed a 2012 opioid overdose at the Playboy Mansion and an alleged retaliation by Combs against her relationship with musician Kid Cudi, which included the bombing of Cudi’s car.

The defense argues that all interactions were consensual, presenting text messages between Combs and Ventura suggesting mutual participation in the events. They contend that Ventura was an active participant in a complex, albeit turbulent, relationship.

Additional testimony from a male escort described being paid to engage in explicit acts while Combs observed, as well as witnessing physical violence against Ventura. The prosecution alleges that these events were part of a broader pattern of coercion and abuse.

The trial has garnered significant public and media attention, with courtroom access tightly controlled due to its high-profile nature. Proceedings are expected to continue for several weeks, with further testimonies anticipated.
