Deadly Chaos as Protesters Storm U.S. Consulate in Karachi After Iran Strike

KARACHI, Pakistan — Chaos engulfed the southern port city of Karachi on Sunday as hundreds of protesters angry over a U.S.-Israeli strike that reportedly killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei attempted to breach the U.S. Consulate grounds, sparking deadly clashes with security forces.

The demonstrations, one of the most violent seen in Pakistan in years, quickly escalated from a large protest into a fierce confrontation outside the consulate on Mai Kolachi Road. Hundreds of pro-Iranian demonstrators chanting anti-U.S. and anti-Israel slogans pushed toward the consulate’s perimeter early Sunday, attempting to break through security barricades.

According to Pakistani medical officials and local authorities, at least nine protesters have died and dozens more have been wounded as security forces used tear gas, baton charges, and, in some instances, live ammunition to disperse the crowd.

Violence Erupts Following Iran Strike

The violence erupted after news spread of a coordinated U.S.-Israeli military strike on Iran, which reportedly resulted in the death of Ayatollah Khamenei — Iran’s long-time supreme leader and one of the most powerful figures in the Middle East. The attack triggered outrage across the Muslim world, with Pakistan’s sizable Shia community taking to the streets in protest.

In Karachi, protesters advanced on the U.S. consulate, breaking through the first lines of security and smashing windows in the outer compound. Eye-witnesses reported that some demonstrators set nearby vehicles ablaze and hurled stones at law enforcement personnel during the confrontation.

Security forces responded with escalating force, including tear gas and batons, to prevent the mob from entering the consulate grounds. Officials confirmed that multiple casualties resulted from these clashes, with several protestors receiving gunshot wounds and others injured in stampedes and intense crowd movements.

Broader Unrest Across Pakistan

The upheaval was not limited to Karachi. Pro-Iran rallies spread across several major Pakistani cities, including Lahore and Skardu, where demonstrators also targeted a United Nations office, setting it on fire in the Gilgit-Baltistan region.

Authorities in Islamabad reported heightened security around the U.S. Embassy and consulates nationwide as officials worked to contain the unrest. Pakistan’s Interior Ministry appealed for calm, urging citizens to express grievances through peaceful channels rather than violence.

International Implications

Global reactions to the strike and subsequent protests have been swift. While some communities have mourned and rallied in solidarity with Iran, others have warned of potential regional escalation and broader geopolitical fallout. The events in Karachi underscore growing tensions and the volatile nature of international relations in the wake of the Iran strike.

As the situation remains fluid, authorities continue to monitor protests and reinforce diplomatic security across the country.
