Newly unsealed investigative documents have revealed a key detail in the case against Brian Cole Jr., the man accused of planting pipe bombs near the Republican National Committee (RNC) and Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters on January 5, 2021. According to prosecutors, Cole discarded the distinctive pair of sneakers he wore during the alleged operation — a move investigators describe as an attempt to eliminate crucial evidence linking him to the scene.
Authorities say Cole was captured on surveillance cameras wearing black and light-gray Nike Air Max Speed Turf sneakers featuring a bold yellow logo. Although the suspect tried to conceal his identity with a hoodie, mask, backpack, and gloves, investigators quickly noted that the footwear stood out. At the time, fewer than 25,000 pairs of that specific model had been sold nationwide, making them unusually identifiable.
When questioned, Cole allegedly admitted that he threw away the sneakers shortly after planting the devices, hoping to distance himself from the operation. However, forensic analysts had already connected several dots: surveillance footage, cell-phone tower pings placing Cole in the area, and credit-card records showing purchases of materials used in constructing the bombs.

Prosecutors also pointed out that Cole expressed frustration over the outcome of the 2020 election, suggesting a possible motive behind the coordinated bomb-planting. Although the devices were discovered before they detonated, officials noted that the operation caused widespread panic, diverted law enforcement resources, and nearly altered the security response timeline ahead of the Capitol riot.
The new details regarding the discarded sneakers highlight the meticulous work involved in the years-long investigation.
