Chicago’s Ukrainian Community Reacts to Trump’s New Stance on Russia-Ukraine War

Ukrainian-Americans in Chicago Weigh Trump’s Words on Ukraine

Chicago, home to one of the largest Ukrainian diasporas in the United States, is buzzing after former President Donald Trump appeared to shift his rhetoric on the war in Ukraine. His recent comments that Kyiv could “win back all of its territory taken by Russia” mark a significant change from his earlier suggestion that Ukraine should consider giving up land in exchange for peace.

For the city’s vibrant Ukrainian community, this pivot brought a mixture of hope and caution.

A Ray of Optimism

Dr. Mariya Dmytriv Kapeniak, president of the Illinois division of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, welcomed Trump’s new statement but emphasized that words alone are not enough. “It’s encouraging to hear a U.S. leader say Ukraine deserves its land back. But what matters is action—military, financial, and diplomatic support. Ukraine cannot fight this war with words alone.”

Local organizations such as Selfreliance Association have echoed this sentiment. Olena Levko-Sendeha, who works closely with refugees and families displaced by the conflict, said: “We’ve heard strong statements before. The question is—will it translate into real policy? We will believe it when we see it.”

Concerns Over Consistency

The community’s skepticism stems from years of shifting U.S. positions. Just weeks ago, Trump’s remarks suggested Ukraine might have to accept painful compromises. Now, the reversal has left many questioning whether his stance will remain steady or fluctuate again depending on political pressures.

Still, leaders agree that even rhetorical support matters, as it influences international perception and boosts Ukrainian morale. But the greater priority remains tangible U.S. assistance: weapons, training, sanctions enforcement, and humanitarian aid.

Chicago’s Ongoing Commitment

While political leaders debate, Chicago Ukrainians continue their grassroots work. Churches, nonprofits, and cultural centers across the city have organized fundraisers, shipped medical supplies, and supported refugee families resettling in Illinois.

For many, Trump’s latest comments provide momentum to push Washington harder. “If the U.S. truly believes Ukraine can win, then it must provide the means for victory,” one community volunteer said during a recent rally.

Looking Ahead

As Russia’s invasion grinds on, Chicago’s Ukrainian diaspora remains steadfast in its advocacy. They welcome Trump’s verbal shift, but the message from the community is clear: support must be consistent, strategic, and backed by action.

Optimism exists, but it is cautious optimism—rooted in the lived experience of a community that has seen promises rise and fade before. For now, they are watching closely, waiting to see whether rhetoric evolves into results.
