Carney Vows Retaliation Against U.S. Tariffs

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has pledged strong countermeasures in response to the United States’ new 25% tariff on auto imports. Calling the move “unjustified,” Carney stated that Canada will impose “retaliatory trade actions of our own,” designed to hit the U.S. economy while minimizing damage to Canada.

Carney emphasized that “nothing is off the table” as his government explores measures to protect Canadian industries. He also signaled a shift away from Canada’s traditional economic reliance on the U.S., declaring that the long-standing trade relationship “is effectively over.”

In response, Canada has already imposed tariffs on C$60 billion worth of U.S. goods and is considering expanding them to an additional C$95 billion. Carney also plans to engage directly with President Trump to address the escalating trade conflict.

This trade dispute marks a significant strain on U.S.-Canada relations, with potential consequences for the North American auto industry and broader economic stability.
