Boston, Massachusetts — Authorities are investigating an intentional explosion that shook Harvard Medical School early Saturday morning, sending shockwaves through one of America’s most prestigious campuses. Surveillance footage captured two unidentified suspects fleeing the scene shortly after the blast.
The explosion occurred around 3:00 a.m. inside the Goldenson Building, which houses several biomedical research laboratories. According to investigators, the incident triggered the building’s fire alarm system, prompting an immediate response from Harvard University Police and the Boston Fire Department. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities have been reported.
Police confirmed that the blast was deliberate, not accidental. “We are treating this as a targeted act,” said Harvard Police Chief Victor Clay, emphasizing that campus safety remains the top priority. The FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) have joined the investigation, working alongside local authorities to identify those responsible.
Surveillance images released by police show two individuals wearing hooded sweatshirts and face coverings, running from the scene moments after the explosion. Investigators believe the pair may have planted or triggered the device before escaping on foot. The images, though grainy, could be crucial in helping the public identify the suspects.
Emergency crews conducted a thorough sweep of the building to ensure there were no additional explosive devices. Bomb-sniffing dogs and specialized technicians cleared the area before declaring it safe later that morning.
The explosion caused minor structural damage to the research facility, with broken windows, scorched walls, and limited fire damage contained to one section of the floor. Classes and research activities have been suspended until further notice while security protocols are reassessed.
The Harvard University community has been left rattled. Students and faculty expressed shock that such an incident could occur at the renowned medical campus. “We’re all anxious but grateful no one was hurt,” said one graduate researcher who works in the affected building.
Investigators have not yet determined a motive, but officials have not ruled out the possibility of domestic extremism or an act of sabotage. Federal agents are reviewing footage from surrounding security cameras and interviewing potential witnesses.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the Harvard University Police Department or submit anonymous tips through the FBI’s Boston field office.
“This was a dangerous and deliberate act,” said an FBI spokesperson. “We will use every resource available to bring those responsible to justice.”
The investigation is ongoing, and more updates are expected as forensic teams analyze evidence from the site.
