On December 19, 2024, John Lyons, 24, was fatally shot by Berwyn police after opening fire on officers. Lyons was suspected of killing three people in Mahomet, Illinois, earlier that evening. After fleeing the scene, he broke into a home and shot two dogs before engaging in a shootout with police. The deaths of the Masons and Lyons are under investigation. The Mahomet community held a vigil to honor the victims.
