Dozens Killed in New Israeli Strikes on Gaza as Ceasefire Talks Advance

At least 42 Palestinians were killed and more than 100 injured in a series of intense Israeli airstrikes across Gaza on June 28, 2025, even as hopes for a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas appeared to be gaining momentum.

According to the Gaza Health Ministry, the overnight strikes targeted multiple residential areas in Rafah, Khan Younis, and Gaza City, including buildings where families had taken shelter. Medical teams said many of the victims were women and children, with several bodies pulled from the rubble in the early morning hours.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated the attacks were aimed at “eliminating high-value terrorist targets” and that some airstrikes specifically targeted Hamas operatives involved in recent cross-border attacks. However, local officials and eyewitnesses say the strikes hit densely populated civilian zones, worsening the humanitarian crisis.

❗ Human Toll Mounts as War Nears Ninth Month

The conflict, now entering its ninth month, has left over 37,000 Palestinians dead, according to Gaza authorities, and displaced nearly 1.8 million people—about 80% of the strip’s population. Basic infrastructure, including water, electricity, and medical care, is on the brink of collapse, with aid agencies warning of famine-level conditions in northern Gaza.

Meanwhile, Israeli officials report 1,200 Israeli deaths since the October 7, 2024, Hamas-led attacks that triggered the war. Over 120 Israeli hostages are still believed to be held in Gaza.

🕊️ Ceasefire Talks Show Signs of Progress

Despite the latest bloodshed, diplomatic sources say indirect negotiations are gaining traction. Mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and the United States have reported “measurable progress” in recent days, with both sides narrowing gaps on key terms:

  • Hostage-for-prisoner exchange

  •

  • Temporary pause in fighting

  •

  • Gradual Israeli withdrawal from Gaza’s interior

However, disputes remain over the permanence of the ceasefire and Hamas’ role in post-war governance. A U.S. official, speaking anonymously, said “we may be closer than ever” to a breakthrough, but warned that “every day of violence undermines fragile diplomacy.”

🌍 International Reaction

The United Nations, European Union, and humanitarian organizations have condemned the continued civilian casualties. UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for an immediate ceasefire and the opening of safe humanitarian corridors.

Human Rights Watch issued a statement demanding both Israel and Hamas uphold international law, and called for investigations into alleged war crimes on both sides.

🔍 What’s Next?

With global pressure mounting and the humanitarian toll worsening by the day, observers say the next 72 hours could be critical. If a deal is reached, it could temporarily pause the fighting and allow for expanded aid deliveries. If talks collapse, a new wave of retaliatory attacks and regional escalation could follow.

For now, Gaza continues to suffer under the weight of war—caught between diplomacy and devastation.
