Moscow-Born Gunman Killed After Deadly Kyiv Shooting Rampage

A deadly mass shooting in Kyiv has left at least six people dead and more than a dozen injured, after a Moscow-born gunman carried out a violent rampage before being killed by police. The shocking incident has rattled Ukraine’s capital, where such attacks are considered extremely rare even amid ongoing wartime conditions.

Authorities confirmed that the attacker, a 58-year-old man born in Moscow, opened fire on civilians in a busy district, targeting people at close range before barricading himself inside a supermarket and taking hostages.

The violence unfolded rapidly. Witnesses described scenes of panic as the gunman moved through the streets, shooting indiscriminately. Four victims were killed on the street, while others were wounded before the suspect entered a supermarket, where he continued the attack and held several people hostage.

Ukrainian special police units responded quickly, surrounding the building and attempting negotiations. However, after approximately 40 minutes without progress, authorities launched an assault on the store. The gunman was ultimately shot and killed during the operation, bringing the immediate threat to an end.

In total, at least six people lost their lives, including one hostage inside the supermarket and another victim who later died in hospital. Around 14 others were injured, among them a child, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the attack.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, calling it a “tragic” act and confirming that the suspect had a prior criminal record. He also revealed that the attacker had lived for an extended period in eastern Ukraine and had set fire to an apartment before launching the shooting spree.

Zelenskyy emphasized that investigators are working urgently to determine the motive, with multiple lines of inquiry under consideration. Authorities are examining the suspect’s background, communications, and possible connections, including whether the attack could be classified as an act of terrorism.

The Ukrainian Security Service has already indicated that the case is being treated as a potential terrorist incident, though no definitive motive has been confirmed. Some officials have not ruled out the possibility of external influence, given the suspect’s background and the broader geopolitical context.

This event is particularly alarming because large-scale shootings are rare in Kyiv, a city more accustomed to external threats such as missile strikes rather than internal acts of mass violence. The event has therefore heightened public anxiety and raised concerns about internal security.

Emergency services remain active at the scene as investigators continue to collect evidence and reconstruct the timeline of events. Meanwhile, officials have expressed condolences to the victims’ families and pledged a thorough investigation.

As Ukraine continues to navigate the challenges of war, the Kyiv shooting rampage stands as a stark reminder of the unpredictable threats facing civilians—both from external conflict and internal a tragedy.
