The United States has intercepted encrypted communications believed to have originated from Iran, prompting concern among intelligence officials that the message could be linked to covert operatives or so-called sleeper cells operating abroad.
According to a federal government alert circulated to law enforcement agencies, analysts detected a coded transmission that may serve as an “operational trigger” for clandestine operatives positioned outside Iran.
Intelligence Alert Sent to Law Enforcement
U.S. intelligence agencies reportedly conducted preliminary signals analysis of the transmission and concluded that it was likely of Iranian origin. The encrypted message was reportedly relayed through several countries before being detected by U.S. monitoring systems.
Officials say the communication was encoded and appeared intended for clandestine recipients who possess the correct decryption key, a method often used to communicate with covert operatives without relying on internet or mobile networks.
Because such systems are harder to track or trace, they are sometimes used in intelligence operations to deliver instructions to agents working abroad.
Possible Link to Sleeper Cells
Security analysts believe the message could potentially be intended to activate or instruct sleeper assets located outside Iran. Sleeper cells are covert operatives who remain inactive for long periods until they receive a signal to carry out missions.
The alert warned that the transmission may have been designed to activate or provide instructions to pre-positioned operatives, although the exact content of the message remains unknown due to the encryption.
Authorities emphasized that the signal alone does not confirm any imminent attack.
Timing After Major Military Escalation
The intercepted communication reportedly appeared shortly after the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in a joint U.S.–Israeli strike, an event that dramatically escalated tensions in the region.
Intelligence officials have previously warned that Iran or groups aligned with it could respond to such strikes through asymmetric tactics, including cyberattacks or covert operations abroad.
No Specific Threat Identified
Despite the warning, U.S. authorities have stressed that there is currently no confirmed threat tied to a specific location. However, federal agencies have advised law enforcement nationwide to increase monitoring of unusual radio-frequency activity and other suspicious signals.
Experts say that encrypted radio transmissions like this are sometimes used in espionage operations because they can broadcast instructions to multiple recipients simultaneously without revealing the identities of the operatives receiving them.
