Chicago Braces for Major Winter Storm: AccuWeather Issues Weekend Watch

The Chicago area is preparing for a potentially disruptive winter system as ABC7’s AccuWeather team issues a Winter Storm Watch covering much of Northern Illinois and Northwest Indiana this weekend. Meteorologists warn that the approaching storm could bring significant snowfall, strong winds, and hazardous travel conditions across the region beginning late Saturday and continuing through Sunday.

According to AccuWeather forecasters, the storm is expected to develop over the central Plains before intensifying as it moves toward the Great Lakes. While forecast details are still evolving, early projections indicate that parts of the Chicago metro area could see several inches of heavy, wet snow. Some northern and western suburbs may experience the highest totals, especially in areas where colder air arrives earlier in the system.

Wind speeds are also expected to increase dramatically as the storm strengthens. Gusts may reach 30 to 40 mph, creating periods of blowing and drifting snow that could reduce visibility and make travel particularly dangerous. Forecasters caution that even moderate snowfall could lead to significant impacts if accompanied by strong winds and rapidly falling temperatures.

The storm’s exact track remains the key variable in determining snowfall totals and the areas most affected. A slight shift north or south could dramatically change outcomes—either bringing heavier snow into downtown Chicago or pushing the worst of the storm toward Wisconsin and Michigan. AccuWeather notes that updated data will help refine snowfall projections as the weekend approaches.

In addition to snow, parts of the region may see a brief wintry mix, including sleet or freezing rain, particularly in communities closer to the Illinois-Indiana state line. While ice accumulations are not expected to be significant at this time, even light glazing could create slippery sidewalks, hazardous roadways, and the potential for isolated power outages.

Residents are urged to monitor the latest forecasts, especially those planning weekend travel. Transportation officials across Cook, Lake, DuPage, and Will counties are preparing to deploy salt trucks and snow-clearing crews as soon as conditions deteriorate. Drivers are advised to keep emergency kits in their vehicles, reduce speed during snowfall, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours.

Despite the storm’s projected intensity, temperatures are expected to remain near or slightly above freezing for much of the event, which may influence snow accumulation on roads and sidewalks. However, a sharp drop in temperatures late Sunday could cause rapid icing as leftover moisture freezes, adding another layer of concern for commuters heading into the start of the workweek.

AccuWeather emphasizes that more updates will be released as new data becomes available. With a Winter Storm Watch already in effect, Chicago-area residents should stay informed, prepare for potential disruptions, and take precautions to stay safe during this weekend’s expected winter weather event.
