14-Year-Old Fatally Shot in Chicago Hours After Christmas Tree Lighting

Tragedy struck downtown Chicago late Friday night when a 14-year-old boy was fatally shot and eight others were wounded in two separate incidents, just hours after the city’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony. The violent episodes marred what was intended to be a festive holiday celebration in Millennium Park.

The first shooting took place around 9:50 p.m. near the Chicago Theatre on State Street, where a crowd of holiday attendees was present. Police reported that seven teenagers, aged 13 to 17, were struck by gunfire. Victims sustained injuries primarily to their legs and were rushed to nearby hospitals; all are currently in good to fair condition.

Less than an hour later, a second shooting occurred on the 100 block of South Dearborn Street at approximately 10:40 p.m. Here, a 14-year-old boy, later identified as Armani Floyd, was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. An 18-year-old male was also wounded and remains in serious condition.

Authorities noted that the shootings erupted amid crowds gathered for holiday festivities, including the Christmas tree lighting and the Christkindlmarket. Chicago police are reviewing ballistics evidence and investigating the circumstances surrounding both incidents. To date, no arrests have been made. Cook County Crime Stoppers has announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

Alderman Brian Hopkins claimed on social media that approximately 300 juveniles were involved in “rioting” in the Loop, though police have not independently confirmed that figure. Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed profound concern over the violence, emphasizing the urgent need to address gun violence among youth and the risks posed at public events. “We have too many guns and too many young people who don’t value their lives or the lives of others,” he said.

The shocking incidents have reignited debates about public safety in Chicago, particularly during large gatherings and seasonal celebrations. Community members and city leaders are calling for enhanced security measures to prevent future tragedies.

The loss of 14-year-old Armani Floyd has left families and the city in mourning. Authorities continue to appeal for witnesses and anyone with information to come forward to assist in bringing those responsible to justice.

As Chicago residents grapple with this holiday season tragedy, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of young people and preventing similar incidents during public celebrations.
