President Donald Trump welcomed Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) to the White House in a high-stakes meeting that blended diplomacy, business, security, and controversy. The visit was marked by major defense announcements, billion-dollar investment promises, and renewed debates surrounding human rights.
The Crown Prince received a full state-level reception, complete with military honors and a formal ceremony on the South Lawn. Inside the Oval Office, Trump praised MBS as a “strong leader” and highlighted the deepening U.S.–Saudi partnership.
One of the most significant outcomes of the meeting was Trump’s announcement that the U.S. plans to sell F-35 stealth fighter jets to Saudi Arabia—one of the most advanced military aircraft systems in the world. The move signals a major upgrade in defense cooperation and gives Riyadh access to cutting-edge U.S. military technology.
Beyond defense, the two leaders discussed large-scale economic partnerships. MBS reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s plans to dramatically expand investments in the United States, potentially reaching $1 trillion across technology, energy, and infrastructure. Business giants including Tim Cook and Elon Musk attended the evening dinner, underscoring how economic collaboration was central to the visit.
Trump also announced his intention to elevate Saudi Arabia to major non-NATO ally status, a designation that boosts military and intelligence cooperation. This shift reflects a broader strategic realignment in the Middle East, with the U.S. positioning Saudi Arabia as a primary security partner in countering regional threats—especially Iran.
Diplomatically, one of the most important topics was Saudi Arabia’s possible entry into the Abraham Accords, the U.S.-brokered framework encouraging normalization between Arab countries and Israel. MBS reiterated that any normalization must be tied to a credible pathway toward a Palestinian state—an issue that remains a major obstacle.
However, the visit wasn’t free from controversy. The 2018 killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi resurfaced during the press briefing. When questioned about it, Trump defended the Crown Prince and urged reporters not to “embarrass our guest,” drawing criticism from human rights advocates and Khashoggi’s widow, who publicly called for accountability.
Still, Trump framed the meeting as a major diplomatic success, emphasizing shared economic goals and stressing that strong U.S.–Saudi ties are critical for global stability.
