Federal immigration agents in tactical gear moved through downtown Chicago on Sunday, detaining multiple individuals in a highly visible show of force that quickly drew sharp condemnation from local leaders. The operation, tied to “Operation Midway Blitz,” intensified an already heated debate over federal immigration enforcement in America’s third-largest city.
Agents Patrol Downtown Hotspots
Witnesses reported that Border Patrol and ICE agents were seen along Michigan Avenue, Millennium Park, and the Chicago Riverwalk, some arriving by boat. Several detentions occurred in full view of bystanders, including what appeared to be a family with children near Millennium Park and a man outside Catholic Charities in River North.
The agents, dressed in military-style gear and masks, were seen questioning pedestrians and leading some away in custody. Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino later confirmed that “several arrests” were made during the walk-through, though he did not provide names or numbers.
Controversy Over Tactics
Civil rights advocates and city officials quickly criticized the operation, alleging racial profiling and intimidation. Bovino himself acknowledged that agents sometimes stopped people based on appearance, telling reporters they were detaining individuals who “look like” they might be in the country illegally.

Mayor Brandon Johnson blasted the federal action as “a brazen provocation,” arguing the presence of heavily armed agents undermines public trust and does little to improve safety.
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker echoed the criticism, condemning what he described as the “militarization of downtown Chicago.” Both officials vowed to support residents who feel targeted and to explore legal avenues to challenge the federal presence.
Meanwhile, Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García accused the federal government of sowing fear in immigrant neighborhoods and using Chicago as a stage for political theater.
Operation Midway Blitz
Sunday’s detentions are part of a larger ICE initiative called Operation Midway Blitz, launched earlier this month. The operation’s stated goal is to apprehend undocumented immigrants, particularly those with criminal records. However, critics argue that the raids are sweeping up individuals indiscriminately, violating civil liberties and destabilizing communities.
Earlier in September, immigrant activists accused ICE of detaining a U.S. citizen and 21 others unlawfully under the program. That case remains under review, adding fuel to the controversy.
