A devastating tragedy struck York County, Pennsylvania, when three law enforcement officers were killed and two others seriously wounded during a violent ambush on Wednesday afternoon. The officers had been attempting to serve a warrant on a suspect accused of stalking and trespassing, when the situation escalated into one of the deadliest law enforcement shootings in Pennsylvania’s history.
The Deadly Ambush
The incident occurred around 2:10 p.m. in North Codorus Township, a rural community in York County. Officers arrived at the farmhouse of the suspect’s ex-girlfriend to serve arrest warrants tied to stalking, prowling, and trespassing charges.
The suspect, identified as Matthew James Ruth, 24, had allegedly been surveilling the property in the days prior. Witnesses reported seeing him peering into windows with binoculars and aiming through a scope captured on a trail camera. When officers entered the unlocked home, Ruth opened fire with an AR-style rifle fitted with a suppressor, according to investigators.
Officers Killed and Injured
The gunfire claimed the lives of:
-
Detective-Sergeant Cody Becker
-
Detective Mark Baker
-
Detective Isaiah Emenheiser
Two additional officers were shot and remain hospitalized in critical but stable condition. Authorities have not yet released their names.
Suspect Neutralized
A fierce gun battle followed inside the home. Law enforcement officers returned fire, killing Ruth on the scene. Authorities described the attack as a deliberate ambush, with the suspect lying in wait for officers.
A Community in Mourning
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro called the killings “an absolutely tragic and devastating day” for both York County and the state. He ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of the fallen officers, praising their courage and sacrifice.
“This community has lost heroes who gave their lives protecting others,” Shapiro said. “We will remember their service and stand with their families during this unimaginable grief.”
Local residents have placed flowers, flags, and messages of support outside police stations, while candlelight vigils are being organized across York County.
The Suspect’s Troubled History
Court records reveal Ruth had a turbulent past with his ex-girlfriend, including accusations of harassment and stalking. The warrant being served at the time of the shooting stemmed from those incidents. Authorities believe his escalating behavior, combined with access to firearms, culminated in the deadly confrontation.
National Attention
The attack has drawn national attention as one of the most violent assaults on police in recent years. Law enforcement agencies across the country have extended condolences, while advocacy groups renewed calls for stronger protections for officers serving high-risk warrants.
Moving Forward
As investigations continue, the families of the fallen officers are being supported by state and local police organizations. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.
For now, York County is grieving deeply, grappling with the loss of three officers who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.
