Republican lawmakers dismissed the speech as political theater. Assembly GOP Leader James Gallagher accused Newsom of avoiding tough questions by refusing to deliver the address in person. Critics argued that the governor is more focused on raising his national profile—possibly in preparation for a 2028 presidential run—than on solving California’s immediate challenges, including homelessness and crime.
Still, Democratic allies praised Newsom’s confrontational stance, describing him as one of the most vocal state leaders willing to challenge Trump directly. Attorney General Rob Bonta pledged continued legal resistance, saying California will remain “on the front lines of the fight for justice.”
